Our own Graham Norton has been recognised at the Proud Scotland Awards 2023!
Graham – who presents The Graham Norton Radio Show every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am on Virgin Radio – won the Celebrity Champion award last night (3rd June). The award recognises someone in the public eye who has used their fame to consistently raise issues of LGBT+ discrimination and fight for equality.
Euan McLeod – Executive Director of the LGBT+ Cooperative, said in a statement: “Graham Norton is a towering figure in entertainment and it is always a joy to listen to him every weekend on Virgin Radio. He has consistently been a champion of the LGBT+ communities so it is right that Scotland’s LGBT+ awards recognise him.
“The award is also very much for his boss at Virgin Radio, Mike Cass, who has ensured that the station is one of the most consistent supporters of LGBT+ equality in UK media. Together they are a formidable force for equality across our islands.”
The black tie awards dinner took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.
The Proud Scotland Awards were founded by the LGBT+ Cooperative in 2019. The awards celebrate the LGBTQI+ community by recognising the outstanding work and commitment of individuals and organisations supportive of communities in Scotland.
They honour and encourage all, north to south, who stand up for diversity, equality and inclusion, and they also raise funds for Glasgow’s Pride and Pride Edinburgh.
Every year thousands of nominations are received across numerous categories, and are then shortlisted down to finalists for the big night, before judges vote on who should win.
