Fashion designer Rohit Bal has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon.
Sources at the hospital said Bal has been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and water in his lungs and that his condition is still very weak.
The 61-year-old fashion designer was hospitalised on Monday evening after he complained of breathlessness and acute chest pain, they said.
“He is on ventilator support in the ICU after it was found that he has a weak heart and his condition is being monitored under senior cardiologist Dr Praveen Chandra,” said an official source.
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body and can lead to heart failure. Any disorder that affects the heart muscle is called cardiomyopathy. It causes the heart to lose its ability to pump blood well. In some cases, the heart rhythm also becomes disturbed. This leads to arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats).
In 2010, Bal had suffered a cardiac arrest and had undergone an angioplasty procedure.
A graduate of St Stephen’s College, Delhi, Bal learnt fashion designing at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi. International celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell have worn his designs.
