5 things to do in Scotland this week — from a Viking festival to thrilling theatre

Few people in Scotland are quite as devoted to keeping the spirit of the Vikings alive as the group who run this 43-year-old festival, which marks the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland battle between the Scots and the Norse. Among the highlights are the burning of the long boat and the fire procession, but there’s so much more to look out for.

It kicks off with a Viking skirmish and ends with a firework display, along the way taking in a food and craft market, workshops, warrior face-painting and more. This year organisers are extending the timeline to encompass the 8th to 15th-century period, known as Scandinavian Scotland.
